A Brief History
The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index—commonly known as the FTSE 100 or “Footsie”—was established on 3 January 1984 as a benchmark of the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalization. Representing many of the United Kingdom’s most established corporations, the index currently holds a combined market capitalization of over £2 trillion, reflecting the concentration of traditional financial power within legacy institutions.
Flip the Footsie 100 (FTF100) was launched on 8 September 2025 as a symbolic and cultural rebellion against this system. Its aim, over time, is to “flip” the FTSE 100—not by competing as a corporate entity, but by creating a decentralised, community-driven movement that challenges how value and participation are defined. FTF100 serves as a statement that open digital communities can hold as much cultural and collective power as the blue-chip elite of traditional finance.
The Lion's Symbolism
The lion was chosen as the emblem of Flip the Footsie 100 to represent courage, defiance, and unity. In British culture, the lion has long stood as a national symbol of strength and sovereignty, appearing on the Royal Arms and throughout centuries of art, sport, and heraldry. It embodies resilience and pride—qualities that mirror the project’s stance against established financial dominance.
Across many cultures, the lion carries similar meaning: a guardian of integrity in Africa, a sign of bravery and nobility in Europe, and a protector spirit in parts of Asia. By adopting the lion as its mascot, Flip the Footsie 100 aligns itself with this universal symbolism of leadership and resistance. The lion’s roar is both a call to courage and a reminder that power does not only belong to institutions, but also to the collective voice of the people.
